Born at the tail-end of a Depression that darkened the entire United States, Shirley Ann Lee took her talent as a singer and pianist from a grim, overcrowded house in Toledo, Ohio, to a glamorous, gospel-fueled adolescence on the road and in Nashville. It wasn’t until her return to Toledo after a disastrous marriage in Los Angeles that, for the first time in almost two decades of public performances, she found the urge to praise God with her own words. - discogs
Fiddler and singer Setters, aka J.W. Day a.k.a. Blind Bill Day was recorded here by John Lomax ,performing one of his own compositions. Recorded at the home of Jean Thomas(1882-1982) – who offers commentary after the song – in Ashland, Kentucky, June 29, 1937. Thomas, who called herself "The Traipsin' Woman," was, among other pursuits, a song collector and the founder of the American Folk Song Festival. She arranged this 1937 session featuring some of her Eastern Kentucky "discoveries," which included Day. Thomas worked as Day's manager, rechristening him "Jilson Setters" and calling him "The Singin' Fiddler of Lost Hope Hollow." Day recorded several records of Kentucky fiddle tunes for the Victor company in the late '20s, and was the subject of two of Thomas' books. Their partnership is a fascinating case study in the ethical complications involved in presenting and promoting "authenticity." - Youtube. aka Dana Owens, this is her debut album, with another cut, "Ladies First," described as a "feminist anthem." I attended the Kennedy Center Awards last December, and Dana was an awardee. I met her and the others -- Billy Crystal, Barry Gibb, Dionne Warwick (as a guest of Renee Fleming, the other awardee). I sat with Dana's aunts at lunch who said she was really very shy. The tribute performance to the "La" brought down the house, with rappers MC Lyte, Monie Love, and D-Nice taking the stages all together (see link). Worth looking up Missy Elliot's introduction on YouTube.

This cut is from the 2nd studio release from the group. According to one poster to the Song Meanings website, "This song is about Mary Jane Kelly #5 of Jack the Rippers "time"1888 in conjunction with Mary Werbelow, who was Jim Morrison\'s first true love. The final track on the Doors first album is called "The end". Morrison originally wrote this song for ex girlfriend Mary Werbelow in some instances, however, the song has a strange trips where parallels entangling the women. Mary #1 is referring to MJK who is sweet. And #2 Mary has remained silent or asleep, literally unknown and unspoken. Present/past split or rip passage of time in between as if some 3rd party personal knowledge started to run amok."

B'net Houariyat (Daughters of Houara) is comprised of five extraordinary women from the region of Marrakech in Morocco, who sing and dance to the rhythm of their drums, performing traditional music of Houara (the region between Taroudant and Tiznit), of the Hammada (plain of the Dra'a), together with Berber dances and urban styles like the Aitci (female seductive appeal) and the Chaabi, the popular style that originated Rai music. The image of women as represented by the music of B'net Houariyat reflects the multiple facets of Islam on a daily life and the female condition, above and beyond the stereotypes, with otion, humor, and energy. Among the themes of the songs of B'net Houariyat are the exaltation of love and beauty; the cry of the young woman that refuses the combined marriage with a rich old man; the derision of the man that has more wives and that works to maintain th ; and, the ritual dance of the woman possessed by her spirits. - Kennedy Center Program notes

She was an expert in the Piedmont finger-picking style, and often played at family gatherings, house parties, and services at the local congregation From her father, who was a dancer, Algia Mae learned buck dancing and the two-step. If you search on Youtube, there are some fantastic video recording (Lomax?) of her porch stomps. Three songs from that session were released on 7" vinyl by Fat Possum Records, under the title George Mitchell Collection, vol. 37. Perhaps I'll bring into the next margin...I'll see what I can find.
